Wow !! I saw something interesting in this result : tkgate.x86_64 : An event driven digital circuit simulator

I installed it, and tried to learn more about TKGate. Now, let me write something about TKGate and an experiment which I did with it.

TkGate is a event driven digital circuit simulator with a tcl/tk-based graphical editor. TkGate supports a wide range of primitive circuit elements as well as user-defined modules for hierarchical design. The distribution comes with a number of tutorial and example circuits which can be loaded through the “Help” menu. Hence, this free software can help engineering students like me to simulate the experiments which are to be done in Digital Electronics Lab.

Here is a screenshot of TKGate simulating the working of a Half Adder. Drawing the circuit in TKGate is simple, i.e. if you want to draw an AND Gate, just click, and press a. This will give you an AND Gate.

This shows the condition when  Switch A is ON and Switch B is OFF. Output is shown using 2 LEDs; one for sum and other for carry. In the above instance, Sum is one and Carry is zero. I simulated all those things I did using an IC Trainer Kit in our Digital Electronics Lab.

According to the timeline I specified to Scribus Team, I should start my project work today ! I was really thrilled in morning and as usual, I went to IC Softwares for attending class. Pramode sir was pointing out some tips on how to write code for our upcoming Lab Exam ( C Programming Lab : Semester 3 ).

At a point, sir asked us to just write a code segment which will call a function with prototype int fun(char *s) in main() and all of us started ..! Sir was walking around checking notebooks to see our answers and at last, he came to me. I showed him my notebook with answer as follows :

Sir was shocked to see a big blunder in my answer !! But then too I just looked into it and don’t see any mistake !, syntax seems to be very much correct (for me).  Sir started explaining the mistake in my code segment and I realised the bad mistake in my answer : t is an un-initialised pointer variable. Hence my code may work or may not ! or in other words, there was no proper memory location to which t was pointing to. I don’t know how I missed this point while writing code. Due to this simple error I made today, I devoted about whole day  for coding in C and did some really wonderful programs. This really helped me to solve many simple, yet error prone confusions which I had in my mind about C Language. And now I feel that there are something important in C which I have not yet touched.

I did a lot of programs manipulating Pointers,Functions and gained some extra knowledge in Pointer implementations which would help me a lot in my Upcoming Scribus Project !. Pramode Sir used to tell us that we should try all problems discussed in IC Classes and to be honest, I’ve not done any code segments in my Computer which was taught in IC Classes. I think this is the case of my friends too. Today, the same things which sir taught me earlier helped me in solving some problems.

I am adding a simple program ( No. of Lines : 27 ) which will read an html file (index.html), extract the text content in it by removing all the tags and store it in a file named index.txt. This worked fine for me and was very much excited to do more experiments with it.

Hey, I installed Fedora 11 Leonidas. My download completed just one hour before and in no time, my Laptop was ready to boot Fedora 11. I am happy with the performance of my machine with this new release. Earlier, some key combinations to reduce the brightness of my laptop was not working, and now, this is working. I am yet to test the finger print reader !

I installed all the multimedia packages from RPM Fusion repository and now waiting for an update to complete. I need to install some development packages like Qt, KDevelop and ofcourse, my favourite KDE 4.2.One of my earlier posts itself helped me to configure RPM Fusion in my fedora. I entered into chat with my sister and my friend Primal; also I opened my IRC client and connected to #scribus-dev. I was waiting for Pierre to respond for a long time and today, I got a response from him. I had earlier submitted a patch to him, in which I tried a hand to migrate QWorkspace class in  Scribus to QMdiArea. This was needed since Qt documentation specifies that QWorkspace class is deprecated. I knew that execution of code which I gave will cause a few segmentation faults and I had specified that to him earlier. He gave me some wonderful reports after investigating my patch and asked me to work furthur on the same.

I saw Oleksandr Moskalenko ( IRC Nick: malex ) poking me and as usual, I entered to some nice chat with him. He asked for my email id, sf.net username etc. and I provided the same. Then the precious moment arrived. I got this message from malex :  ” malex> jainbasil: I just added you as a member of Scribus project on sf.net “

whoohoo… I was given Commit access to Scribus Subversion in sourceforge.net.

Thank God ! This was the moment I’ve been waiting for !

Thomas Zastrow , lecturer of computer science and computer linguistics at the university of Tübingen/Germany and long-time Scribus contributor, will mentor me in this project.

Now, a little about my work. My project aims at the enhancement of the Text Filter in Scribus so that it can import InDesign Exchange Files, InDesign Snippets, XTags, plain XML etc., to create a new dialog widget that can handle the global preferences for import/export of these XML based file formats. It will also implement a new UI for the Text Filter to make it more flexible and consistent with other Scribus dialogs.

In short, I’ll be dealing with some proprietory XML file formats this summer.

Thanks to Scribus Team, Sarai and NIXI and I hope I can complete this project successfully in the given time limit ( It is a four month project unlike GSoC, so I will be busy with this project till September ! )

Bottom Line: I’ve another contribution to be done after my work with Scribus. This project is Community Integration work for KStars. Thanks to Akarsh Simha for assigining community integration work to me! More details on this work will be posted soon.

I truly believe that even a dull looking wallpaper will kill the freshness of a user. And KDE is really great even in this small aspect too. This made me to switch over to KDE completely ( I’m using KDE 4.2.2 in my Fedora 10 ). Yet another feature which pulled me towards KDE was Get New Stuff. It is possible for a user to install all sort of themes, scripts or each and everything you need to customize your KDE desktop in a single button. This is really a cool feature which helps me to install new themes, widgets and all stuffs.

Now, to the point. I configured GTalk in kopete ( It’s really a simple job, but, I’d like to share this with you..!)

Kopete..!

Kopete is an instant messenger supporting AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, IRC, Gadu-Gadu, Novell GroupWise Messenger, and more. It is designed to be a flexible and extensible multi-protocol system suitable for personal and enterprise use. (don’t get panic, I took this explanation from kopete’s official site !!). In short, kopete can handle all your instant messaging systems. Currently, I am using Yahoo and GTalk in kopete.

Now, configuring Yahoo is not at all a tedious job since it is given already in the drop down list of kopete. In case of Google Talk, while creating  an account, select Jabber from the list.

Username : Enter your email Id (i.e. username@gmail.com )

Now, In the Connection Tab, check the option “Use protocol encryption (SSL) ” and also ” Override default server information”. Checking the later will enable the server line edit where we should enter “talk.google.com”

GTalk configuration in Kopete

Done………! This will enable GTalk in Kopete. This instant messenger is highly themable, so just pull your chatting into its maximum height and enjoy…!

I’ve been using  Ubuntu 9.04, which was upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10. I love the new changes in this version, Gnome 2.26 is the most prominent among them. Jaunty Jackalope contains the stable, cool looking Gnome 2.26 by default. It is very nice to see the integration of Brasero CD/DVD buning  program with all other programs. Another is Computer Janitor; this application keep our system clean. It helps us to find and remove the packages are no more needed. Also, It will help us to change the configurations that will benefit our system.

Ubuntu 9.04 boots faster than its earlier versions, the machine booting time has been reduced considerably. It also supports the new ext4 filesystem ( I am yet to try it ! ). I am also addicted to the new small and sleek usplash screen of Jaunty Jackalope. So download, install and Enjoy..!
