World Around Me

My College

It is with great pride, I am talking about my college, Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur. I really enjoy /live the college life here. The Foundation stone for Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur was laid by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957, when he was the Prime Minister of India and yester year, my college celebrated its Golden Jubilee. My batch stands special to it as we are known as the Golden Jubilee Batch of GEC, Thrissur.

GEC, Thrissur and to be particular, Department of Computer Science and engineering have a handful of contributions into the world of Free/Open Source Software. Students from my college have done/been doing many Projects in FOSS. To be particular, we were the only college which got about 3 GSoC Projects a year ( 2 for Tux4Kids, 1 for Zope Foundation)….That’s all about my college…

IC Software

I have been using Linux for about past 5 years, but had never known about the aspects like Software freedom, Contributions from the community etc till I reached GEC, Thrissur ; particularly I.C Software.

This is the place where I learned to contribute, share and to enjoy software freedom.Yes, this is the place where I am learning more on coding and about FOSS. I. C. Software is an educational firm run by my FOSS guru Pramode sir. He gives me knowledge to contribute and work on the Free Software. You may reach him at http://pramode.net

FSUG, Thrissur

Even though I belong to Cochin, I have a special care for Free Software Users’ Group, Thrissur. FSUG, Thrissur was inactive for about 2 years when I reached GEC, Thrissur. One evening, Me, My friends Aswin and Alex met in my room and discussed on promoting free software among our friends ( particularly in Computer Science Department). This ultimately led to the rehabilitation of FSUG, Thrissur as I reconstructed its website and Pramode sir made a mailing list for it.

Later, On December 4, 2008, FSUG, Thrissur organised a one day seminar on Free/Open Source Softwares which pulled a crowd of about 400 in place of 200 to 250 seats. This was a real boost to the foss community of Thrissur. I am really happy that I also took a talk on Introduction of Common GNU/Linux Tools. A more detailed report on this seminar is available here
